“This Weeks Study Notes

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Intro: Jeh, Judges:
Valley of Jehoshaphat
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In the verses above the Prophet Joel has been giving a call for the nations to be awakened and come up to the valley of ‘Jehoshaphat- Jeh judges’.

The point here is that ‘Jeh’, the LORD, “JEH Judges” a this place! It is a call that goes out to all peoples, one that is put forth in the context of war, for Joel tells the people to “beat your plowshares [that which is for farming] into spears; and for the weak to say “I am strong”; ALL TO GO to a place of final judgment where the Lord will judge the heathen who come there.

Joel 3:10  Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.
11  Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.
12  Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.
Joel 3:13  Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.
14  Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
15  The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.
16  The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

The keys here are:

The Valley of Jeh, the valley of decision:
The Calling of the nations to come, irresistible call!
This involves war
It is a place of decision
This will be a place where Jeh, the Lord will meet them to judge them.
This is a place where the call is for “your mighty ones to come down, O LORD!

The decisions already made are:
1. The call will go out
2. It will involve war
3. It will be place where the LORD will meet those who come for war with Him
4. It will occur at a time when the harvest is ripe.
5. It will occur at a time when in this harvest, metaphor- the ‘vats overflow from too many grapes’
6. It will occur because this wine, this harvest, is full of wickedness
7. It will be connected with end time signs and wonders
A. Sun darkened
B. Moon darkened
C. The stars will withdraw their shining
D. The heavens and the earth will shake
8. The LORD will be the hope of his people
9. The LORD will be the strength of the children of Israel

It is interesting to note about this valley!

Some scholars have identified this valley with the valley in 2 Chronicles 20:26 where King Jehoshaphat obtained a great victory over Gentile nations. But many see this as improbable.

Nevertheless, the valley identifed with this since the 4th century according to ISBE and other sources is the Kidron valley.

Even the Muslims see this as the same valley of decision, the kidron valley is according to Muslim teaching the place where the “Bridge known as Sirat” dividing heaven and hell is to stretch.

Pious Jews want to be buried here on the slopes of this valley in order to be at hand at the resurrection!

Today this valley, especially that part adjacent to the temple mount is crowded with Moslem and Jewish graves.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jeh, Judges:
RV says Har Magedon, , means “Mount of Megiddo”, AV says Armageddon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is one place we find consistently as a place where “Jeh Judges”, a place called Megiddo!

Megiddo, “place of troops”:
place of troops, originally one of the royal cities of the Canaanites (Josh. 12:21), belonged to the tribe of Manasseh (Judg. 1:27), but does not seem to have been fully occupied by the Israelites till the time of Solomon (1 Kings 4:12; 9:15).
Previous battles in this place:

Megiddo was last inhabited by a garrison of Roman soldiers after the churban of the Bais HaMikdash. Shortly after that, it was abandoned, never to be inhabited again.

Throughout its history, Megiddo was built and rebuilt, twenty-five times. War after war, battle after battle was fought there. In the last century, the French Emperor Napoleon fought a battle there. In the twentieth century, in 1918, the British fought the Turks at Megiddo. The British won the war and took Eretz Yisroel [land of Israel] away from the Turkish Empire. The 400-year rule of the Turks in Eretz Yisroel [land of Israel] had come to an end.

Josiah and Pharoah-necoh:

2 Kings 23:29  In his days Pharaohnechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates: and king Josiah went against him; and he slew him at Megiddo, when he had seen him.
30  And his servants carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo, and brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own sepulchre. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king in his father’s stead.

Reforms of Josiah:
2 Chronicles 34:33  And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.

Josiah Kept Passover:

2 Chronicles 35:1  ¶Moreover Josiah kept a passover unto the LORD in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.

Pharoah Necho comes against Josiah, Necho warns Josiah that “he Necho comes in the name of God”. Nevertheless, Josiah paid him no mind and went out against him anyway!

2 Chronicles 35:20  ¶After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him.

21  But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
22  Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo.

King Josiah mortally wounded and dies, Jeremiah the prophet grieves over this loss!

23  And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded.
24  His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.
25  And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah: and all the singing men and the singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day, and made them an ordinance in Israel: and, behold, they are written in the lamentations.
26  Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and his goodness, according to that which was written in the law of the LORD,
27  And his deeds, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.

Now the question, Why did such a good King as Josiah die? Did the Pharoah actually have God’s speed to go destroy Judah?

Josiah eradicated the bad and restored the good. He restored Passover in a way no other king in Judah or Israel ever did. He was the good, yet for all of this, he could stop God’s judgment upon Judah!

Judgment was set!

The LORD did not turn from the fierceness of his great wrath because of Manasseh had provoked him. The LORD was intent to remove Judah out of his sight as he removed Israel, and he will cast off this city Jerusalem, and the house of which I said my name shall be there!

2 Kings 23:23  But in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, wherein this passover was holden to the LORD in Jerusalem.
24  Moreover the workers with familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD.
25  ¶And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.
26  Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of his great wrath, wherewith his anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations that Manasseh had provoked him withal.
27  And the LORD said, I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there.
28  Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

The MORAL: The Valley of decision, where mere mortals, nations, kings, meet the LORD GOD!

Jeremiah’s Warning:

Jeremiah 18:6  O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
7  At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;
8  If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
9  And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;
10  If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.
11  ¶Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

Judah’s response and the inhabitants of Jerusalem:

12  And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

There is a decision for every nation and every person on earth!
There were many such battles fought on this plain of Megiddo!

Sisera and his Host;

Judges 5:19

Judges 5:19  The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of Canaan in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money.
20  They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.
21  The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, thou hast trodden down strength.
22  Then were the horsehoofs broken by the means of the pransings, the pransings of their mighty ones.
23  Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.
24  ¶Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent.
25  He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.
26  She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples.
27  At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.
28  The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots?
29  Her wise ladies answered her, yea, she returned answer to herself,
30  Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colours, a prey of divers colours of needlework, of divers colours of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil?
31  So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

Sisera was not destroyed in the battle but at the hands of a righteous woman! Israel had been sold into the hands of Jabin king of Canaan, whose captain of his host was Sisera.

In the days of the prophetess Deborah and Barak, the enemy general was Sisera. A big battle took place at the River Kishon, just outside of Megiddo. The LORD made a great miracle occur and the entire enemy army was swept out to sea. Sisera was killed by the righteous woman Jael. When Sisera did not return home from the battle, his mother realized his army was defeated and he was killed. She cried for her son one hundred times

Israel Sold into hands of the Gentiles for their wickedness!

Judges 4:1  ¶And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, when Ehud was dead.
2  And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.
3  And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.
4  ¶And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
5  And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

Deborah prophecies and calls Barak to go to War!

6  And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedeshnaphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?
7  And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.
8  And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go.
9  And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.
10  ¶And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.

Megiddo has always been a place of judgment. It is a place where Israel met on the battlefield her enemies, even those in whose hands they had been sold. Israel went to war, great battles were fought. Men died, even leaders and good kings like Josiah died there.

It was a place where God made judgments upon those nations and peoples.

The Gentile nations here are seen as heathen, unbelievers, who God uses at different times to punish his people to bring them back. It is also a place where the Gentiles will find one final judgment upon t hem.

Har Mageddon, Armageddon:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
God Judges the Nations Armies at Har-megeddon
God Judges the Nations themselves at the Judgment of the Nations
Har Magedon, , means “Mount of Megiddo”, AV says Armageddon
It is found only in this passage:
Revelation 16:16  And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
It is described as the rallying place of the kings of the whole earth, who are lead by the unclean spirits issuing from the mouth of the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet, assemble here for the war of the great day of God the Almight. ISBE
Many see this place as ‘Megiddo’
Now let us get a timeline, going back to Joel, for this day of decision, we find that the valley of Jehoshapat – “Yah Judges, Jeh Judges”
Joel 3:10  Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.
11  Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.
12  Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.
Joel 3:13  Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.
14  Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
15  The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.
16  The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
After the final battle of the Day of the Lord God Almight, Har megeddon is the judgment of the nations!
Sheep and the Goats: Judgment of the nations, This is a judgment that brings together, Joel 3:11-17 , Matthew 25:31-46, and 2 Thess 1:7-10
Takes place before the millenium, it is not to be mistook for the Great White Throne Judgment. It is also not the judgment upon the dragon, the beast, and false prophet. Nor is it upon the armies of Armageddon. The nations send the armies but are distinct from them, after Christ has dealt with the armies he will deal with the nations and gather them together for judgment.
Here the sheep go into the kingdom, and the goats into punishment. Even though the reason is the ‘mistreatment of the Lords brethren’, here many see is Israel is the connection for the judgment, the deeper reasons lie in the fact that the sheep have eternal life and the goats do not have it!
2 Thessalonians 1:7  And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8  In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
Thessalonians gives two reasons here:
1. These do not know God
2. These do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
Sheep, profitable servants, the wheat, those who do his word
Goats, unprofitable servants, tares, those who do not do his word
Matthew 25:30  And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
31  ¶When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
32  And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
33  And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
34  Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36  Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37  Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38  When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39  Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
41  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43  I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44  Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45  Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
46  And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
These things lead up to the final battle:
Times of the Gentiles fulfilled:
1. Great wrath upon this people and great distress in the land
2. Jerusalem trodden down gentiles, the biggest leader, beast and false prophet yet to come
3. Signs, distress nations,
4. After the tribulation, shall the sun darken, moon not give her light, stars heaven fall
5. Son of man comes
6. Gathering of the elect
Luke 21:22  For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
23  But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.
24  And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
25  And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
26  Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
27  And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28  And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
Mark 13:24  ¶But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,
25  And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.
26  And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
27  And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven
The Final Battle:
The Bowl judgments, Rev 16 begin the Wrath of God upon the earth!
Sixth Vial [bowl]:
Revelation 16:12  ¶And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.
13  And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
14  For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
A message to Gods people amidst this chaotic wrathful time!
[we were told to come out of her my people, Rev 18, coming out in this context is watching, keeping your garments [see Laodacian church who is - naked -wretched -poor -blind], we are to be clothed in fine linen, this is the righteousness of the saints, see Rev 19:8.
Remember the marching orders “you overcame by the blood of the lamb, by the word of your testimony, and love not your lives unto the death” – Rev 12:11; “keep the commandmants of God and faith of Jesus” -Rev 13:10; “keep the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus” Rev 12:17
Rev 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
16  And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon
Babylon the Great falls on the sixth bowl or vial judgment, as the nations are being gathered to the battle of that great day of God Almighty!
17  ¶And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
18  And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.
19  And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
20  And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
21  And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great. [One of Joshua’s Joshua chapter 10 battles ended with God hitting their enemies with such hail]
Joshua 10:11  And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.
The Great Day of his Wrath depicted in the Sixth Seal:
Rev 6: 12  And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13  And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14  And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15  And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16  And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17  For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
Where are God’s People:
They are either martyred by now and in heaven or are sealed!
Revelation 6:10  And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
11  And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
This is a picture of the Call to the “marriage supper of the Lamb”!
Revelation 19:1  ¶And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:
2  For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.
3  And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.
4  And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.
5  ¶And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.
6  And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
7  Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
8  And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
9  And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
Revelation 19:11 17  And I saw an angel standing in  ¶And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
