Deus Absconditus, spoken of by Pasca, referred to a ‘hidden God’. For many this is who God is, “hidden” and mysterious. For many as well just to believe in such a God, a divine being is placed in the ‘absurd’ or in the ‘category of irrelevance’, for they believe if God does exist, he placed all things here, and it continued, on its own at its own ability within creation itself.

But for the fact that this ‘hidden’ or ‘unknown’ God has revealed himself to man. Thus for this study,

Revelation: the act of God whereby he discloses himself or communicates truth to the mind, whereby he makes manifest to his creatures that which could not be known in any other way. This revelation may occur in a single, instantaneous act, or it may extend over a long period of time; and this communication of himself and his truth may be perceived by the human mind in varying degrees of fulness. all powerful, able to do anything he wants; he also has the power of ‘self limitation’, god has limited himself to some extent by giving free weill to hi rational creatures.

God is present in all his creation, but in no manner limited by it. God transcends space, time, and the present we live in, yet he is in all this, all at the same time.

For us, he is the ever present one able to help us!

Deuteronomy 4:7  For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

Psalm 46, the Psalm revealing our very present God who is near to help, even during turmoil!
Psalms 46:1  ¶<> God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2  Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

God knows all things, past, present, and future; he knows them immediately, simultaneously, exhaustively, and truly

God doesn’t need us to prove his existence, or need us to prove he exists, God is!
But God does call us to be Salt, Light, through our Testimony to him, of him, for him, by him, and finally through him!

LIGHT:
Matthew 5:14  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Matthew 5:15  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Matthew 5:16  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

SALT:
Mark 9:50  Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another

Luke 14:34  Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
35  It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear

The fool has said in his heart, “there is no God”, further the man who was rich toward God, but only to himself was called “thou fool”. God rewards both the fool and the transgressors of His law!

Psalms 53:1  ¶<> The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.

Proverbs 26:10  ¶The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.

Luke 12:20  But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

He that loves death, “hates God” !

Proverbs 8:36  But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Before Paul came and stood on Mars’ hill, he had gone into the synagogue with the Jews and the Gentile worshipers.

Paul having come to Athens, his spirit was ‘provoked’ within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols. Acts17:16-17

3947), primarily, “to sharpen” (akin to A, No. 2), is used metaphorically, signifying “to rouse to anger, to provoke,” in the passive voice, in Acts 17:16, rv, “was provoked” (kjv, “was stirred”); in 1 Cor. 13:5, rv, “is not provoked” (the word “easily” in kjv, represents no word in the original).

Above we see the Apostle coming into a ‘idol’ soaked city and went into the synagogue with the Jews and gentile worshippers, here we find the gentile worshippers among the Jews in the synagogue.

But Paul also reasoned and disputed with all those who would listen in the marketplace! It was here he came into contact with the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers.

Calling Paul a ‘babbler’ [lit-seed picker], this word originally described one who picked up scraps of information in the marketplace; later it referred to one who picked up scraps of learning here and there and peddled them.

Epicureanism-seeking tranquility as the highest good.
Stoicism- being free from passion and passively accepting everything in life as invevitable, impersonal fate.

Both were popular philosophies at the time!

Mars hill- the ‘hill of mars’- open forum for philosophical debate

They heard him speaking of Jesus, Paul preached Jesus!

Acts 17:18  Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
19  And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?
20  For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
21  (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

Matthew Henry’s Commentary says of Athens: Whatever strange gods were recommended to them, they admitted them, and allowed them a temple and an altar, so that they had almost as many gods as men—facilius possis deum quam hominem invenire. And this city, after the empire became Christian, continued incurably addicted to idolatry, and all the pious edicts of the Christian emperors could not root it out, till, by the irruption of the Goths, that city was in so particular a manner laid waste that there are now scarcely any remains of it1

Paul speaks to those listening:
I perceive that in all things ye:

‘Are too superstitious’
1174 ??????????? [deisidaimonesteros /dice·ee·dahee·mon·es·ter·os/] adj. The compound of a derivative of the base of 1169 and 1142; TDNT 2:20; GK\fs24plain 1273; AV translates as “too superstitious” once. 1 in a good sense. 1a reverencing god or the gods, pious, religious. 2 in a bad sense. 2a superstitious.

1. The people had made an inscription to the ‘UNKOWN GOD’!
2. They were ignorantly worshipping an unknown God.
3. Paul then took to reveal this ‘UNKNOWN GOD’ to them!
4. God
-Made the World and all things in it
-God who is Lord of heaven and earth
-This Lord does not dwell in temples made with hands
-He is not worshipped with mens hands
-He gives life and breath to all things
-Made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on earth
-He set the bounds of their habitation and calls the end at the beginning of all things
-In Him, we Live, move,a nd have our being
-we are the Offspring of God
-This God is not like Gold, silver, graven images
-God commands all men to repent
-God has ordained a time to judge the world in righteousness, by that man he ordained; he as
given assurance to all men, in that he raised him from the dead.

Acts 17:22  ¶Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
23  For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
24  God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
25  Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
26  And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
27  That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28  For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29  Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
30  And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
31  Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

1. The Just shall live by faith! Period!

Romans 1:17
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

2. Gods wrath revealed against all godlessness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness!

Romans 1:18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

3. God is manifest in them; God has shown man!

Romans 1:19
¶Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

4. God has made all things, the world and all that is therein, the heavens, all reveal his invisible hand and power, and Godhood, they are without excuse.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

5. Men when they knew God, glorified him not as God, nor were they thankful, becoming vain in their imaginations, their foolish heart darkened!

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

6. Though thinking themselves wise, they were fools, changing the glory of God into corruptible man, birds, fourfooted beasts, and creeping things!

And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

7.With this idolatry came uncleanness because of the lusts of their hearts, so God gave them up to these affections, to do these dishonorable things between themselves.

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

8. Having changed the truth of God to a lie, they then worshipped and served the creature more than the creator who is blessed forevermore.

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

9. God gave them up to their lusts of the hearts, which became ‘vile affections’, an example being that women changed the natural use into that which is against nature.

10. A like example is that men left the natural use of the woman, burned in lust to one another, men with men, working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error.

11. God then gave them over to a reprobate mind, because they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, so they did the things which are not convenient.

12. They knew the judgment of God, that those who do these things are worthy of death, and not only do them, but have pleasure in them that do them.

1. The Sure Mercies of David:

Isaiah 55:3  Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
4  Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.
5  Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.
6  ¶Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
7  Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8  For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
9  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10  For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
12  For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13  Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

2. I will gather others with the Outcasts of Israel!

Isaiah 56:1  ¶Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed.
2  Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil.
3  ¶Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
4  For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;
5  Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.
6  Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;
7  Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
8  The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.

3. The Witness of Jesus Christ:

John 5:31
¶If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

John 5:34
But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

John 5:36
But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

John 5:37
And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
:18  I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

John 10:25  Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.

4. The Witness of the Servants of Jesus Christ!

John 15:14  Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
16  Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
17  These things I command you, that ye love one another.
18  ¶If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
19  If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
20  Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
21  But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
22  If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.
23  He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
24  If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.
25  But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
26  ¶But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
27  And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

5. The Testimony of ‘Shaking off the Dust from your feet’ given to the twelve, applies to us!

Mark 6:7  ¶And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;
8  And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:
9  But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.
10  And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.
11  And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

6. Delivered up before men, turning it to a testimony!

Luke 21:12  But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.
13  And it shall turn to you for a testimony.
14  Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:
15  For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.
16  And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.
17  And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake.
18  But there shall not an hair of your head perish.
19  In your patience possess ye your souls.

7. Witness of the Apostles:

Acts 4:33  And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

8. Witness of the Gentiles Receiving Gods Grace of Salvation through Jesus Christ!

Acts 10:38  How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39  And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40  Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41  Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42  And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43  To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44  ¶While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45  And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

9. Corinthians example of the testimony of Christ being confirmed!

10. He that believes has the witness in himself!

1 John 5:10  ¶He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
11  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

11. The Witness of the Martyrs fro Jesus Christ, Fifth seal!

Revelation 6:8  And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
9  ¶And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10  And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
11  And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

12. The Testimony of the Two Witnesses in Revelation

Revelation 11:3  ¶And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
4  These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
5  And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
6  These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
7  And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
8  And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
9  And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
10  And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11  And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
12  And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
13  And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

13. Final Testimonial and War!
Revelation 12:11  And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Revelation 12:17  And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

14. Final witness to the world, this gospel in all the world then the end shall come!

Matthew 24:13  But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14  And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
