As for the Plagues in Egypt, remember, God also after sending them, protected his people after the 4th plagues. Up till that point, the Israelites suffered along with the rest of Egypt. As Moses brought forth the word to Pharoah, God sent forth these plagues. But in this epic battle, Pharoah’s own sorcerer’s were able to duplicate some of the miracles. All along the way the Pharoah’s heart was hardened. Only the advisors and the Egyptians themselves really saw and accepted this over time as these judgments coming from the God of the Hebrews.
Aaron’s rod becomes serpent
the enchanters also did the same!
YHWH demonstrates true power when confronted by the magical displays and deceits by the enemy. He uses a serpent to devour the other serpents here.
Exodus 7:11 Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.
Waters become blood
the magicians did the same!
YHWH demonstrates the real source of life and sustenance in Egypt by turning the Waters of the Nile, Egypt’s life source, into blood!
Exodus 7:21 And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.
22 And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, neither did he hearken unto them; as the LORD had said.
Frog’s appear everywhere
the magicians bring forth frogs!
YHWH judges the Goddess Heqt-associated with the frogs, showing he controls the land of Egypt.
Exodus 8:7 And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt.
Lice Appear on man and beast
the magicians see this as the finger of God!
YHWH judges the land of Egypt in continuing plagues, Saying: “I will strike-7:17″ and “I will smite-8:2″. Judging all parts of the land, he proves the gods of this nation are dumb idols and cannot protect the enemies of God from the One True God, who is Eternal!
Exodus 8:19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.
In the above plagues I see Gods striking the Egyptians as both judgment and also satirical. In the Frogs, which were associated with the Goddess Heqt, YHWH is saying “you worship this god who is not a god and hold frogs in esteem with her, here have a few more frogs. You will have frogs till your sick of them. You will know who is the real God here! All judgments reflect the same issue, you think your in control, let me show you who is really in control.

Flies Appear as a plague upon all Egypt
but God sends a sign along with this plague.
The sign would be that the ‘land of Goshen’ would be severed or separated from the plague. This is where God’s people dwelt. This sign would prove the difference between the “Lords people and those of the world, typified by Egypt.”
Exodus 8:22 And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.
23 And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be.
Thus Goshen, a “mound of earth”, became a place of safety for the Hebrews during the plagues.
Fifth plague the livestock diseased
but the Lord made a difference and protected the livestock of the Israelites.
This plague that destroyed livestock is seen as an attack on Hathor, the mother goddess of Egypt who often protrayed in the form of a cow. Again we see, judgments not only on Egypt but her gods and goddesses.
Exodus 9:4 And the LORD shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt: and there shall nothing die of all that is the children’s of Israel.

Sixth plague, boils break out
on the magicians and on all the Egyptians, but not the Hebrews. Here the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils!
Exodus 9:11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.
Seventh plague Hail mingled with fire
a Supernatural miracle in a land that hail was rarely seen. Because of the scope of this devestating judgment that could take life, it is seen as a judgment also on the God of Egypt Seth who was protector of the crops and Isis, the goddess of life.
Here again the Hebrews were safe in Goshen. It is revealed here the purpose and ability of the Lord against Egypt, but here is also seen Gods mercy. God did not want to kill men, any men or nations.
Exodus 9:24 So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.
25 And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail smote every herb of the field, and brake every tree of the field.
26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, was there no hail.
The LORD who is doing this could have wiped off all Egyptians from the face of the earth, but he did not! He now tells the Pharoah his purpose and a warning!
Pharoah was raised to power to shew the Lords power and that his name would be known in the earth!
Exodus 9:14 For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.
15 For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth.
16 And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
The Mercy of God to the Egyptians: Moses delivers God’s Word, those of the Egyptians who feared the word of the LORD, did as Moses admonished!
Exodus 9:19 Send therefore now, and gather thy cattle, and all that thou hast in the field; for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die.
20 He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses:
21 And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field.
Eighth plague of Locusts
were to show these signs of the Lord that would provide the Hebrews with stories of how such ‘mighty things’ were done in Egypt by their LORD God, that the Hebrews and their children may know ‘I am the Lord’.
Exodus 10:2 And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son’s son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD
Locusts would fill all the houses of the Egyptians and their servants! No one in Egypt would of seen a time as this, a Locust plague so severe! The Locusts come and eat what is left of the crops after the devestation of the hail. So now they face famine as well, with death if they cannot eat. In this way, the judgments on Isis and Seth are continued!
Exodus 10:6 And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day. And he turned himself, and went out from Pharaoh.
The Ninth Plague is darkness:
This is the direct judgment on the Sun God Amon-Ra, who the Pharoah was considered to be an incarnation of Amon-Ra. Darkness comes and all over Egypt the darkness so severe it was described as “thick” darkness and one that can be “felt”. But in Goshen, the Hebrews had light!
Exodus 10:21 ¶And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.
22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days:
23 They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
The Death of the Firstborn:
The Lord goes into the midst of Egypt!
Here we see Moses telling Pharoah that the Lord said “About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt.” This is the direct intervention of the LORD who brings the judgment himself. This is seen as a judgment as well over the God Osiris, the Egyptian giver of life.”
The Hebrews are told to ask of the Egyptians precious and prized articles of silver and gold. This is the wages that the Hebrews earned for so many years and were never paid. God is further humbling Egypt, but also providing what had been lost through servitude. God is seen as a restorer and provider here.
Exodus 11:2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.
But in the last show of force, the death of the firstborn, which became known as Passover, the Hebrews were given special instructions and told not to go out of their house. Here we see that even in Goshen there was no protection from this plague. For the death angel was passing by and the Hebrews had to sacrifice a ‘lamb’, eat fully clothed, watch, and be ready to leave. The were to apply the blood to the doorposts and stay indoors. If anyone were to go out, then they would be struck by the plague.
The Passover:
It is particularly important to see here that the ‘land of Goshen’ which was the place ‘severed’ or ‘separated’ from Egypt, now would not be spared. There would be instructions for the Hebrews.These instructions became known as the feast ‘Passover’, for the Lord would Pass through the land of Egypt [type of the world]. All who would not follow these instructions would not be protected from this judgment.
Exodus 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’S passover.
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
Furthermore, we see the picture of the coming Messiah, Jesus who was the ‘lamb of God’ and who has saved us from the ‘death’ that greets all. Thus the blood applied and obedience to Gods commands that day, brought the Hebrews through safely. The same thing applies today for the believers. Apply the blood of Jesus and keep the commands of God, watch, be clothed, and be ready to be delivered.
All this has special meaning for us today in that it is not the place but the God whom we serve who will save and deliver us. The God of the Hebrews protected them, and this God, now our Father, through Christ Jesus will do so as well.
It is important to note here that I believe and this is backed up by others, who see a time when God’s people today are to ‘come out of Babylon’. God has always told his people to leave Babylon before judgment falls. Today is no different. But we must listen and wait until we get the word. A word that will fall from a true “prophet” of God. God will make known when to go and where to go!
