“Settled in Complacency”

To those who are Complacent in their sins and think I do not see, behold, and reward to every man according to their ways, consider this:

To those who are Complacent in their sins and think I do not see

,
behold, and reward to every man according to their ways, consider this:
-Woe to those who say the Lord will not do any Good, nor will he do Evil!
-Woe to those who continue in their ways, not considering the Lord of Hosts!
-Woe to those who say the Lord does not see my ways!
-Woe to those who call me Lord and do not what I say!

For these being ‘settled in their complacency’ will be searched out, for these be the Day’s that the Lord shall find them! The coming Day of the LORD of Hosts.

But to those who are my redeemed:

-who obey my voice
-who received instruction and correction
-who trust in the Lord
-who draw near to their God

The Lord says:

-do not fear
-raise the hands
-strengthen the knees

The Lord sends judgments, instruction, to counsel nations and peoples that they should repent of their ways. Yet many, such as Israel, ignore these judgments, that are warnings to consider your ways before God. The Lord had punished Israel, the northern tribes, and he had punished Judah. Yet Judah continued to ignore these judgments and warnings. Even though their former nation, a sister, Israel had been carried away, after facing judgment for her iniquity, Judah still did not believe it would come to them.

Here we see, “surely thou wilt fear me”, seeing what the Lord had done, this would of persuaded many a person, but not Judah. One reason was made clear in this prophecy of Zephaniah, those in charge of both the judicial government and the religious order were leading the people astray. They refused instruction, as a result, their dwelling would be cut off, just as Israel, the northern kingdom had been done.

Zephaniah 3:7  I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

Judah had become settled in their complacency. They had become so accustomed to the sin, rebellion, and doing things their own way that they did think the God whom Israel when they were one nation had served even cared anymore. They thought this God was so removed he would not do evil nor any good to them. He was just an icon, something to polish, think about once in a while, but nothing to consider greatly. Surely He was nothing they were to fear, afterall their own priests and leaders did not consider him either.

We find that the word ‘complacency’ here is read as ‘lees’. We find this in several verses in the old testament, but in the context of being settled on his lees, in other words, being at ease and saying in the heart that the LORD who blesses, guides, keeps, and judges all men can do no good nor evil, these things together, bring forth sin and rebellion. All stemming from pride and arrogance thinking God is not involved in the nation of men!

Jeremiah 48:11  Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.

Zephaniah 1:12  And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.

The word ‘lees’ here is:
“8105 ??????????? [shemer /sheh·mer/] n m pl. From 8104; TWOT 2415a; GK 9069; Five occurrences; AV translates as “lees” four times, and “dregs” once. 1 lees, dregs. r”

It is a word describing the ‘dregs’ of wine. That which settles at the bottom of the barrel of wine. It is not the good wine, it is that stuff which are the dregs, the sediment.

This is the most worthless parts of the wine. Used as well for instance, ‘the dregs of society’-oxford university press.

These are those who live in the land which the Lord God gave to Israel. But as Zephaniah wrote this book of prophecy, the nation Israel had been divided into two parts after Solomon. Then the Northern kingdom, known as Israel, also as Ephraim had been scattered to the four winds for their sins. Now Judah, was ‘settled on their lees’. The most worthless part, that which before God would not respond to his calls for repentance. Now, the LORD was sending judgment and he would cull the herd so to speak. He would save those who repented and all else would be destroyed.

This is what happens when men take the roll of God and throw away his laws, teachings, and ignore his warnings. This is what has been happening in American churches and has affected this nation as well. Once a nation who understood the Laws of God, now does not. Once a nation who had prayer in school, the ten commandments all over the nation, and was one nation who looked to the LORD God. Now it is a nation of many gods.

The churches in America also are ‘settled on their lees’. The dregs of society that has an appearance of godliness, but has no power. It has given itself over to mammon, money, and the gods of this world. Pursuing its own way, the church in America has grown fat and rich, but in all its material successes, it is the most ‘worthless part’ of anything that even attempts at godliness. It is the dregs, the ‘lees’ just as Judah had settled on this, so too has America.

The Example of Judah and Jerusalem!

When we see Judah and also behold Jerusalem, we know that that our LORD came from the ‘tribe of Judah’, for he is the Lion of the ‘tribe of Judah’. Yet to his own he went and they did not receive him. We see this in the history of Judah and the religious order at Jerusalem. Yet, the sad fact is, we saw this trend throughout Israel. As such, even today, we see this in our own churches. So when speaking of Judah and Jerusalem, or Israel, we can see our own church today. The church in America, Canada, United Kingdom, and all over. Wherever there are men and denominations we can see the example of Judah and take heed to her mistakes and the warnings given to her, must pertain to us. We must awaken ourselves or face the same as Judah!

When speaking to the issue of Jerusalem, it was called the ‘oppressing city’ by Zephaniah. This was given to him from the LORD. The Lord did not see Jerusalem as anything but filthy, polluted, and an oppressing city! Why was this?

Well lets see the next verse:

When we talk about ‘she’ we refer to the people within the city. These make up the total of what a city or nation is. When we say America needs to repent, or her churches, we mean the people need to do that. For a nation can do nothing and is nothing, a nation is people and the people before God must repent!

The people, beginning with the leaders here which leads a nation in its direction. Make no mistake an honest, Godly leader, will lead a nation in righteousness. A wicked and dishonest leader will pursue his own agenda.

Here we see that this city:

1. Did not obey the voice of the LORD!
2. She did not receive correction when the LORD sent it!
3. She did not trust in God!
4. She did not draw near to her God!

Zephaniah 3:1
¶Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!

Zephaniah 3:2
She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God.
The sad fact is many nations today are like that. This book we call Zephaniah is very prophetic about the end times. The book speaks of the LORD will ‘gather the nations’ to pour upon them ‘mine indignation’. This is known as the Day of the LORD.

Zephaniah 3:8  ¶Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

The even sadder fact is that the ones who were religious, and seem to know God, did not know him at all. They lead the people in error. The people did not obey God, did not respond to him when he sent judgments into their land to wake them up. They did not even draw nigh to him when threatened with major judgment. They were so complacent and settled on their own ways, they were not going to stop, repent, or even consider what God could or would do for their rebellion! This is what many in America is like, they are also ‘settled in their complacency’, or ‘settled on their lee’s’. This makes up a rebellious, Laodacian ‘lukewarm’ Christian so caught up on what their religious leaders, pastors, and so called prophets say, they miss God totally.

The Political Leaders:

Zephaniah 3:3
Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.

In Judah and Jerusalem we find the Prophet Zephaniah speaking directly to the leaders as well. He says of the ‘princes’, they are ‘roaring lions’, or predators seeking prey. These are the civil leaders of the city. The ones who are politically in charge and make laws. Zephaniah calls her ‘judges’ ‘evening wolves’, who are predators hunting under cover of darkness. This is the ones who are to bring God’s justice to the political scene in Jerusalem. Under the guise of justice, and in the cover of darkness, that is sin, they find victims and chew them up, and even continue to oppress until the very morrow in the bones are gone as well. This means total and complete ‘ravenous’ attitude to devour and has no semblance to justice, let alone Gods justice.

The Religous Leaders:

Zephaniah 3:4
Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.

Zephaniah then speaks to the prophets here. Saying of them that they ‘betray souls of people for prophet’. These are people who will betray anyone for personal reasons and gain. They simply could not be trusted. They are unjust and had no shame. The priests also had no shame for they are accused of ‘polluting the sanctuary’ and done ‘violence to the law’. They simply ignored the words the LORD God had given them. They did not follow the law, but corrupted it. The Priests did not reveal or speak against the ‘shame and sham’ of the way things were in both the political and religious structure in Judah and Jerusalem. They went along, even contributing to the ‘sin’ by going against Gods own laws. In all four instances here, the princes, the judges, the prophets, and the priests, they did inquity, they knew no shame, and they did not repent even after the LORD sent judgments to wake them up! They instead worked even harder to continue doing as they had done.

Zephaniah 3:5
The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.

Zephaniah 3:6
I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant.

Zephaniah 3:7
I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

The Day of the LORD: 11 Descriptive Words used by Zephaniah!

God will send judgments upon men and nations in a redemptive process. The means and methods are to bring man to an understanding that his ways are evil before the LORD God. That to continue in doing these things will bring death! The LORD uses this to bring man to repent and turn from his rebellious and prideful ways and come into his presence in sorrow and repentance so that mercy can spare him!

When the LORD sends judgment as in the ‘Day of the LORD’, this is final. It is very destruction and for prophetic purposes, when we use the phrase ‘Day of the LORD’, we mean judgment in total upon nations and men. The examples of such are Northern Israel, Judah, Sodom and Gomorrah, Babylon, and others in biblical text. There is also a finality of this judgment, when the all the nations are gathered before him in the ‘Great White Throne’ judgment, this too, is the final ‘Day of the LORD’, when all men will face eternity for their deeds.

For that which falls upon nations we have 11 words that describe this day which falls upon a nation!

Zephaniah 1:15  That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,
16  A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.
17  And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.
18  Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.
Eleven Words that describe the ‘Day of the LORD’ in Zephaniah!

This will be a day of wrath, anger, rage, an outpouring of the excess fury of the LORD!
1. Wrath
strongs; 5678, rage, anger, outpouring of, excess, fury,

This day is described in pairs of Hebrew words as follows: Trouble and distress: affliction, adversity, anguish, and tribulation, that will also be a straitness [narrow, strict, rigorous], no escape.
2. Trouble
strongs; 6869, distress, affliction, adversity, anguish, tribulation
3. Distress
strongs; 4691, anguish, straitness, stress

Pair here is Devastation and Desolation: destruction on the land and people, as a storm brings ruin, so this one from the LORD of Hosts will bring wasteness upon all with desolation [bleak, dismal emptiness, utterly wretched and unhappy]
4. Devastation
strongs; 7722, wasteness, destruction, desolate, destroy, storm, ruin,

5. Desolation
strongs; 4875, waste, desolation, ruin

Pair here is Darkness and Gloominess: the darkness that comes with this judgment from the LORD is so severe, that it will seem as night, an obscurity, gloominess, that during this calamity [an event causing great and sudden damage or distress] men will walk about as blinded, dazed, confused, as if in a dream, or walking about as a blind man. They will be both confused, dazed, and in the dark as to the severity and totality of the judgment!
6. Darkness
strongs; 2822, obscurity, darkness, night

7.Gloominess
strongs; 653, darkness, gloominess, calamity

Pair here is Clouds and Thick Darkness: The judgment appears as so harsh, unusual, and severe, it is seen as the hand of God. In this the presence of God in the judgment is seen by its severity and all encompassing. As an invading force, it sweeps upon the land, as a ‘storm cloud’ and brings such harshness that it becomes a ‘thick darkness’ for all around is evil, death, bloodshed, and judgment. This reveals a darkness so thick, as with thick fog, you could cut it with a knife.
8. Clouds
strongs; 6051, cloud, cloudy, cloud-mass; refers to the strong presence of God in judgment, which can come as a ‘storm cloud’ ex, an invading force upon the land as in Babylon invading Israel. .
9. Thick Darkness
strongs; 6205, gross darkness, heavy or dark clouds, thick darkness

Pair here is Trumpet and Alarm: Because of this judgment is so severe, they are told to sound the ‘ram’s horn’, a blast of the horn for warning, for an alarm, to announce war or a battle that is here! It is, the LORD of HOSTS doing battle against his enemies!

10. Trumpet
strongs; 7782, trumpet, ram’s horn, used by the prophet, priest, and the watchman to wake the city when the enemy is sighted. Used to awaken and alarm, to stir the people to listen.
11. Alarm
strongs; 8643, shout, sound, blowing, signal, alarm, sound of tempest, blast of war.

The Seven Points of the Day of the LORD

,
made here following the Eleven descriptive Words of the Day of the LORD!

1. I will bring distress upon men
2. They will walk like blind men
3. This will occur because they have sinned against the LORD [and did not repent nor seek him]
4. Their blood shall be poured out like Dust
5. Their flesh shall be as refuse
6. Their Silver and Gold will not deliver them out of my hand
7. The whole of the land shall be devoured

Zephaniah 1:17
And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.

Zephaniah 1:18
Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

Make no mistake here, there is a difference between ongoing judgments the LORD God sends upon a nation and its people and the “Day of the LORD”.

The fact and number one difference, is ‘SEVERITY’! You will know the difference between them when it happens. You will fully understand once it happens! We go through judgments that are meant to get us to repent and seek the LORD. When the Day of the LORD occurs on a particular nations, the finality of it is the Wrath of God upon those who did not repent and refused too!

We will see this finality in the form of the Great tribulation! In America, we see and continue to see judgments. We have not as yet seen the ‘Day of the LORD’ here in America as yet. We will see this! It will be final, complete and sweep the whole of the land. It will entail all that we have discussed above.

The rich won’t escape, the poor either! This will come as a ‘storm of wrath’ complete and not withheld at all. It will bring death, mayhem, destruction, and more as is described above by the Eleven words given by Zephaniah.

IN one Sentence, the LORD will finish all who oppose his will, he will destroy all the gods of the earth, and in the end, all men shall worship this God, the LORD of HOSTS!

Zephaniah 2:11

The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.

What are People to DO!

The first thing to do is to Gather:

-Gather yourselves together
-Gather before the destructive decree is issued
-Gather before the Day of the Lord hits you, and this day upon your nation passes as chaff
-Gather before the Lords Anger comes on you

Zephaniah 2:1
¶Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired;

Zephaniah 2:2
Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you.

The Second thing to do is to Seek the LORD:

-Seek the LORD you meek of the earth [the meek, in this passage, it relates to the intended outcome of affliction from God, namely humility]
-Those who have held the LORDS Justice [judgment, rights, the LORD sits as the judge, who hears a case and renders a proper verdict, there are those who uphold the established ordinance of the LORD and with this comes rights that belong to these people. For it is God who will bring every work into judgment, whether it be good or bad, Eccl 12:14]
-Seek righteousness [Septuagint-those who are upright, just, righteous, conforming to Gods Laws]
-Seek humility [the meek, in this passage, it relates to the intended outcome of affliction from God, namely humility]
-Maybe the day will pass and you will be hidden in the day of the LORDS Anger!

Zephaniah 2:3
Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.

Take heed, watch, pray always, that you may be accounted worth to escape all these things!

Luke 21:34  And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
35  For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
36  Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Seek the Good, and not the evil, that ye may live!

Amos 5:14  Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
15  Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

I Jesus have sent mine Angel to testify unto you these things!

Revelation 22:11  He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12  And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
14  Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15  For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
16  I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
17  And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
